SV Fika: The Journey to Readiness

For the past year and a half, we’ve been working tirelessly to prepare SV Fika, our 1972 Mason 48 ketch, for an adventure of a lifetime: an around-the-world voyage. When we first stepped aboard, we knew she had good bones, but like any well-loved boat, she needed serious upgrades and repairs to be ready for extended cruising. Here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished so far:

Powering Up: Battery Bank, Solar, and Victron System

We’ve completely overhauled Fika’s electrical system, starting with installing a robust 800Ah BattleBorn lithium battery bank, ensuring we have the energy storage needed for life off-grid. To keep those batteries charged, we added three 415-watt solar panels, giving us ample renewable power. Our energy management is now handled through a full Victron power system, allowing us to monitor and optimize power usage efficiently.

A Modernized Galley: All-Electric Cooking & Freezer Addition

One of the biggest transformations on Fika has been converting the galley to all-electric cooking. Gone are the days of propane stoves—we’ve installed a microwave, induction cooktop, and a Cuisinart air fryer/toaster/oven combo. For grilling, we’ve added a Weber Q1200 propane grill, perfect for those nights at anchor. To improve food storage, we rebuilt the fridge, installed a new evaporator plate and condenser unit, and even added a dedicated freezer to keep provisions fresh for longer passages.

Structural Reinforcement: Rebuilding the Hull & Shaft Seal Replacement

One of the most demanding but rewarding projects was completely rebuilding the bottom of the boat. From grinding down the fiberglass to reinforcing the hull, this was a massive effort to ensure Fika is solid for years to come. Alongside this, we replaced the shaft seal, a crucial step in preventing leaks and maintaining propulsion reliability.

Perkins 4.236 Engine Rebuild (in Progress…)

Our trusty Perkins 4.236 diesel engine is currently in the midst of a major rebuild. While it still has some work left, we’re confident this overhaul will give it many more years of reliable service. To further ensure engine security, we had the motor mounts cleaned, inspected, and welded, thanks to the incredible work by Valley Fabrication.

Fresh Water System Improvements

A reliable fresh water system is critical for long-term cruising. We’ve made key improvements, including adding a new faucet to the galley sink and making upgrades to improve water flow and filtration throughout the boat.

Electronics & Lighting Upgrades

We removed all of the old electronics, clearing the way for a modern navigation and communication system. While new equipment is still to come, the cleanup process has prepared us for a seamless install. In addition, we’ve converted all interior and exterior lighting to LED, reducing power consumption and improving visibility onboard.

Rigging & Safety Enhancements

Sailing safely means having reliable rigging and secure points for crew safety. We’ve replaced sections of the running rigging to ensure smooth sail handling. In the cockpit, we’ve added padeyes for safety harnesses, giving us secure attachment points in rough conditions.

Looking Ahead: Final Preparations Before Departure

After all these upgrades, we’re closer than ever to setting sail. There’s still more to do, including finishing the engine rebuild, installing new electronics, and putting Fika through her final sea trials. But as we stand on the deck of our transformed boat, we know all the hard work has been worth it.

We’re excited to share our journey as we move from refit to full-time cruising. Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to untie the lines and sail toward the horizon!
